Why the gap is so large

A third row does not appear out of thin air. It occupies the space where a two-row SUV puts its trunk floor. When the Pilot's third row is up, what is left behind it is a narrow well between the seatback and the tailgate. It is deep enough for a week of groceries or four backpacks. It is not deep enough for a stroller plus a hockey bag plus a cooler, which is the exact load that sends people back to the dealership annoyed.

This is why the honest question is not "do I want three rows." It is "how many days a month will row three actually have a person in it." If the answer is four or more, buy the Pilot and enjoy it. If the answer is two, you are paying for a third row and giving up half your trunk to store it.

On EX-L and above, the middle position of the second-row bench lifts out. Leave it in and you have eight seats for the weekend with the cousins. Take it out and you have captain's chairs with a walk-through to the third row, which is the single easiest way to make a three-row car livable for kids who buckle themselves.

The TrailSport does not offer that flexibility. It ships with fixed captain's chairs, so it is a seven-seater and stays a seven-seater. If you were counting on eight seats and you had your heart set on the TrailSport's look, that is a conflict worth discovering here rather than at delivery.

One local detail worth knowing

On the day we pulled these prices, Lake County was the cheapest of the three benchmarks we checked: $4.2651 here, against an Illinois statewide average of $4.3180 and a Chicago metro average of $4.4403. If you commute south and fill up near the city, your Pilot number gets worse than the table shows and your hybrid number gets worse by less, because the hybrid burns fewer gallons to begin with. That is the whole point of a hybrid in stop-and-go traffic.

Does the fuel saving cancel out the price difference?

Not quite, and anyone who tells you it does is selling. Compare the two most common configurations. A CR-V Sport Hybrid AWD is $37,130 plus $1,395 destination, which is $38,525. The TrailSport badge means two different things

Honda puts a TrailSport badge on both vehicles, and it does not buy you the same thing on each. The Pilot TrailSport gets a genuine lift: 8.3 inches of ground clearance against 7.3 for every other Pilot. The CR-V TrailSport Hybrid gets no lift at all. It sits at 8.2 inches, exactly the same as any other all-wheel-drive CR-V. What it adds is tires and appearance.

That is not a criticism of the CR-V TrailSport. All-terrain tires are the single most useful change you can make for a gravel driveway or an unplowed side street, and 8.2 inches is a perfectly normal number. But if you assumed the badge meant the CR-V had been raised, it has not, and you should hear that from us before you sign.

What Changed for 2026

The Pilot got the bigger update. The CR-V got the more interesting one.

The Pilot refresh, in plain terms

The screen is the headline, and it should be. Going from the previous display to a 12.3-inch unit with Google built-in changes the daily experience more than any spec sheet line. The quieter cabin matters too. Two to three decibels does not sound like much written down, but on a long stretch of I-94 it is the difference between talking and raising your voice.

The powertrain and i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive system carry over unchanged, which is fine. They were the strong part already.

The CR-V update, in plain terms

The wireless phone connection and wireless charger becoming standard is the change most owners will feel every single day, because it removes the cable from the equation entirely. The TrailSport Hybrid is the news, and it is genuinely new for the CR-V line, with the caveat about ride height covered above.
