Pick the Odyssey if your hardest daily problem is the garage or the third row, and consider an AWD Pilot if added low-traction capability is the priority. Every 2027 Odyssey has power sliding doors and 38.1 inches of third-row legroom, against 32.5 inches in the 2026 Pilot. Every Odyssey is front-wheel drive. The Pilot offers i-VTM4 all-wheel drive; Honda lists it as standard on TrailSport, Touring, Elite and Black Edition, and available on Sport, EX-L and Touring Blackout. On an icy Lake County morning, tire condition and tire type remain critical regardless of drivetrain.
Which problem is bigger in your house?
Most families are really choosing which compromise to live with. The Odyssey has the advantage for sliding-door access and third-row space. An AWD Pilot adds all-wheel-drive capability and carries a higher maximum tow rating than the Odyssey. Find your biggest daily constraint in the table, then verify the exact trim and equipment before you decide.
| Daily test | 2027 Honda Odyssey | 2026 Honda Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Tight garage, kids climbing out | Power sliding doors on every trim | Hinged rear doors; 5.1 in. shorter, tighter turning circle |
| Third row every day | 38.1 in. legroom; Magic Slide 2nd row with walk-in | 32.5 in. legroom; one-touch folding 2nd row |
| Snow and ice | Front-wheel drive with Snow Mode | i-VTM4 AWD (standard on 4 trims) with Snow mode |
| Towing | Up to 3,500 lb | 3,500 lb FWD; 5,000 lb AWD |
Will it fit, and can the kids get out, in a tight garage?
Width won't settle it, because Honda lists both at 78.5 inches. The Pilot is 5.1 inches shorter and turns in a 37.8-foot circle against the Odyssey's 39.64 feet, so it is easier to back into a crowded two-car garage. Once you are parked, the Odyssey pulls ahead: a sliding door travels along the body instead of swinging toward the wall, the snowblower or the other car.
| Garage measurement or feature | 2027 Odyssey | 2026 Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 205.2 in. | 200.1 in. (TrailSport 200.4) |
| Width (Honda figure) | 78.5 in. | 78.5 in. |
| Height | 69.6 in. | 71.0 in. (EX-L 70.9, TrailSport 72.0) |
| Turning diameter, curb to curb | 39.64 ft | 37.8 ft (TrailSport 37.7) |
| Rear doors | Power sliding, all trims | Conventional hinged |
| Power-folding side mirrors | Elite only | TrailSport, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite, Black Edition |
| HomeLink garage opener | All trims | TrailSport, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite, Black Edition |
| Power tailgate | All trims, with programmable height (hands-free on Elite) | All trims, with programmable opening height; hands-free with Walk Away Close on Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite and Black Edition |

Honda does not publish how much side room an open rear door needs, so we won't guess. Measure the gap on your door side at home and bring the number to the test drive. Then park each one next to a car on our lot and have the kids climb out on the tight side.
Two smaller details matter in older garages. Both vehicles offer a programmable power-tailgate opening height, which can help under a low door track or shelf. The bigger day-to-day difference is still the Odyssey's sliding rear doors versus the Pilot's hinged doors. Power-folding mirrors also come on more Pilot trims than Odyssey trims.

How easy is the third row to reach, and to live with?
The Odyssey is easier on both counts. Its Magic Slide second-row seats slide and include a walk-in feature, and its third row has 38.1 inches of legroom and 48.4 inches of hip room. The Pilot's second row folds flat at one touch on every trim, and on the EX-L, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite and Black Edition the middle seat comes out to leave a walkway. Its third row is tighter, with 32.5 inches of legroom.
| Third row and access | 2027 Odyssey | 2026 Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Third-row legroom | 38.1 in. | 32.5 in. |
| Third-row hip room | 48.4 in. | 44.6 in. |
| Third-row headroom | 38.3 in. | 39.3 in. |
| Second-row layout | Magic Slide seats with walk-in; multi-function center seat | 40/20/40 bench; removable middle seat (EX-L, Touring, Touring Blackout, Elite, Black Edition); captain's chairs (TrailSport) |
| Third-row lower LATCH anchors | Both outboard seats | Passenger side only |
Sources: American Honda, 2027 Honda Odyssey Specifications & Features and 2026 Honda Pilot Specifications & Features, retrieved September 21, 2026.
Headroom is the one third-row number where the Pilot leads, by an inch. For car seats, the Pilot's third-row lower anchors are on the passenger side only, while the Odyssey has them on both outboard seats. IIHS rates LATCH ease of use G+ on both the Odyssey and the Pilot.
A winter note that applies to either vehicle: NHTSA warns that heavy coats can interfere with a car seat harness. Use thin, warm layers and lay the coat over the harness once it is snug. And try the third-row climb with your kids in snow boots.
Does the Pilot's AWD matter in Lake County snow?
It helps most when you are pulling away on snow. Every Odyssey is front-wheel drive, with Intelligent Traction Management, which Honda labels Snow Mode. The Pilot offers second-generation i-VTM4 AWD, standard on the TrailSport, Touring, Elite and Black Edition and available on the Sport and EX-L. All-wheel drive helps you get moving. It does not help you stop, and stopping grip comes from your tires.
Ground clearance favors the Pilot where Honda publishes it: 7.3 inches on most trims and 8.3 inches on the TrailSport, according to Honda. Honda's Odyssey specification sheet does not list a clearance figure, so we won't quote one. Every Pilot has Snow and Tow drive modes.
The Odyssey uses all-season tires from the factory. Most Pilot trims also use all-season tires, while Honda specifies all-terrain tires for the TrailSport. NHTSA says tread is unsafe at 2/32 of an inch and should be replaced, and its winter driving guidance says to consider snow tires for winter conditions. Before pricing a winter set, confirm the tire size on the specific vehicle or door-jamb label; factory sizes vary by trim.
For Lake County winter driving, tire condition and tire type matter regardless of drivetrain. AWD can be useful when pulling away on snow, on unplowed streets or on steep driveways, but it does not replace appropriate tires or careful braking distances. AWD Pilots also have rear differential fluid maintenance requirements; follow the vehicle's Maintenance Minder and owner's manual. Our Maintenance Minder guide explains the service codes, and our dashboard warning lights guide explains the AWD system light.

Which trims keep a family warm on a January morning?
Both start with heated front seats and remote engine start on every trim. After that, the equipment pattern differs by trim. On the Pilot, heated outboard second-row seats are listed on TrailSport, Elite and Black Edition, and the heated windshield and heated steering wheel are also listed on TrailSport, Elite and Black Edition. On the Odyssey, the heated steering wheel is Elite-only, and Honda's specification sheet lists no heated second-row seats.
| Cold-weather feature | 2027 Odyssey | 2026 Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Heated front seats | All trims | All trims |
| Remote engine start | All trims | All trims (key fob) |
| Heated steering wheel | Elite | TrailSport, Elite, Black Edition |
| Heated second-row outboard seats | Not listed | TrailSport, Elite, Black Edition |
| Heated windshield | Not listed | TrailSport, Elite, Black Edition |
| Heated side mirrors | All trims | EX-L and above |
| Rear-seat heater ducts | All trims | All trims |

If heated second-row seats matter, Honda lists them on the Pilot TrailSport, Elite and Black Edition; they are not listed on Touring or Touring Blackout. Our 2026 Pilot research page lists what else each Pilot trim adds.
Safety, fuel and towing, side by side
IIHS lists the 2025-26 Pilot as a 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK under its 2025 award criteria; that is not the same as a 2026 award under the newer 2026 criteria. The Pilot rates Acceptable in the updated moderate overlap front test. The 2027 Odyssey rates Poor in that test and does not carry an IIHS award. Both rate Good in the small overlap and updated side tests. For fuel economy, Honda publishes an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined for the Odyssey and front-wheel-drive Pilot; ratings vary by Pilot drivetrain and trim.
| Measure | 2027 Odyssey | 2026 Pilot |
|---|---|---|
| IIHS small overlap front | Good | Good |
| IIHS moderate overlap front, updated test | Poor | Acceptable |
| IIHS side, updated test | Good | Good |
| IIHS headlights | Acceptable | Good |
| IIHS pedestrian front crash prevention | Acceptable | Good |
| IIHS award | None | Top Safety Pick (2025 criteria) |
| EPA-estimated mpg, city / hwy / combined | 19 / 28 / 22 | FWD 19 / 27 / 22; AWD 19 / 25 / 21; TrailSport 18 / 23 / 20 |
| Maximum towing | 3,500 lb | 3,500 lb FWD; 5,000 lb AWD |

In the Odyssey's updated moderate overlap test, IIHS rated the rear passenger's head and neck injury measures Poor. IIHS notes that Honda changed the Pilot's second-row seat belts starting with 2025 models. If rear-seat crash-test performance is important to your decision, review the complete IIHS results rather than relying on one rating: the Odyssey also rates Good in the small overlap and updated side tests and Good for seat belt reminders on 2025 to 2027 models. Both include Honda Sensing and a Rear Seat Reminder as standard.
So which one belongs in your driveway?
The Odyssey is the more practical fit if sliding-door access and frequent third-row use are the priorities. An AWD Pilot is the stronger match if you want all-wheel drive, need the higher 5,000-pound maximum tow rating, or place more weight on the cited IIHS rear-seat result. If you routinely drive in severe winter conditions, consider dedicated winter tires regardless of which vehicle you choose.
- Three kids in car seats or boosters, one narrow garage: the Odyssey.
- Two kids, occasional carpool, hilly or unplowed street: a Pilot EX-L AWD or Touring, with the removable middle seat.
- Heated rear seats for the kids are non-negotiable: a Pilot TrailSport, Elite or Black Edition.
- Boat, camper or snowmobile trailer over 3,500 pounds: an AWD Pilot.
A few practical checks before you choose. Do not expect Pilot third-row and cargo space to match a minivan. If AWD is important to you, verify the drivetrain on the specific Sport, EX-L or Touring Blackout you are considering because those trims can be configured differently. TrailSport adds off-road-focused equipment that may not matter for mostly paved-road use. And if your trailer's loaded weight exceeds the Odyssey's 3,500-pound maximum rating, it is not the appropriate tow vehicle.

More Odyssey and Pilot questions from Lake County families
Is there a 2027 Honda Pilot yet?
Not in Honda's published specifications. As of September 21, 2026, the newest Pilot specification release in Honda's newsroom is for the 2026 model, which is why this guide compares the 2027 Odyssey with the 2026 Pilot. If a 2027 Pilot arrives on our lot, ask us to walk you through what changed before you decide between model years.
Which one holds more hockey bags and strollers behind the third row?
The Odyssey, by a lot. With every seat in use, Honda lists 32.8 cubic feet behind the Odyssey's third row and 18.6 cubic feet behind the Pilot's. Fold the third row and it is 86.6 versus 48.5 cubic feet. Those are Honda's SAE-standard figures from the Odyssey and Pilot specification sheets. Bring your own gear and load it yourself.
Can the Odyssey tow a small camper or a pair of snowmobiles?
Up to 3,500 pounds, with conditions. Honda's Odyssey specifications note that towing requires surge-type or electric trailer brakes plus the Honda accessory towing package and hitch ball, and that premium fuel is recommended when towing. Honda rates properly equipped AWD Pilot models up to 5,000 pounds. Actual allowable trailer weight depends on vehicle configuration, occupants, cargo and equipment, so use the owner's manual and the specific vehicle's ratings before towing.
Is the Pilot TrailSport worth it for a Lake County family?
Only if you use what it adds. Honda lists 8.3 inches of ground clearance, a full-size spare, 265/60R18 tires, a heated windshield and heated steering wheel on the TrailSport. In exchange, it seats seven and carries the Pilot's lowest EPA-estimated rating, 20 mpg combined. On plowed suburban roads, an AWD EX-L or Touring on winter tires covers most families.
